WORKSHOP

Teaching and Learning

Teachers, Andrea Edwards and Amy Craig, started the workshop with modeling two number talks with students.  Number talks is a short 15 minute daily activity between teacher and students that can change students view of mathematics, develop mental math skills and engage in creative, open mathematics. Ms. Edwards always starts the activity with students saying it is time to have fun, think and talk about number and make sense of your ideas and other people’s ideas. The students took turns and provided answers to the math problems and defending the strategies. The school board asked a few clarifying questions to the teachers.

The next portion of the workshop introduced how the school district supports teacher growth through the teacher evaluation process. Shari Conditt started by explaining how the year looks for teacher evaluations and how the process is ongoing all year long. The comprehensive evaluation is a very in-depth process that involves eight (8) criteria. When a teacher is on focus, this allows the teacher to pick one of these criteria as their focal point for the school year. The principals each took two of the eight and spent a few minutes to explain to the school board.

Next month’s workshop will be a student panel on November 13, 2018.
