Woodland Public Schools Multilingual Learners (MLL) Department is committed to equipping language learners to acquire the skills needed to develop English language proficiency in an environment where their languages and cultural assets are valued as important resources for learning. The MLL Department is also committed to supporting Woodland Public Schools in partnering and engaging with students and their families.
At the middle and high school levels, Content-Based Instruction (CBI) or sheltered instruction is used in classes made up of multilingual learners. Explicit English language development (ELD) and grade-level academic content are delivered by specifically trained ELD teachers in conjunction with core academic content teachers. This content is tailored to a student’s proficiency level and addresses all language domains as needed. Trained paraprofessionals and certificated staff also provide additional support so students can access core academic content instruction.
At the elementary level, students participate in the Supportive Mainstream model which provides access to grade-level academic content and English language development through participation in their mainstream classrooms with support provided either individually or in small groups by specifically trained educators. Trained paraprofessionals and certificated staff also provide additional support so students can access core academic content instruction.
