What is a Paraeducator?

Paraeducator is defined as a school employee who works under the supervision of teachers or other professional practitioners.

Some Paraeducator duties are instructional in nature and provide direct services to students. This could include providing instructional support in a classroom, in small groups, or to individuals. The job titles used to identify these employees may include, among others: paraprofessionals, teacher aides or assistants, educational assistants, instructional assistants, or one on one aides.

Some Paraeducator duties are supervisory in nature. The job titles used to identify these employees may include, among others: recess aide or lunch supervision.

Paraeducators are required to have completed one of the following requirements: Either (1) documentation to support an Associate’s Degree or transcripts to verify they have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university,or (2) ETS ParaPro Assessment with a passing score of 455 (this can be taken at ESD 112 or at Lower Columbia College), (3) The Master Teacher Inc. Paraeducator Online Training Program: 65% or (4) Completed a Paraeducator 2 Apprenticeship Program.

Substitutes

Certificated Substitutes: The current rate of pay for certified substitutes is $209 per day or $125 for a half-day. Certificated subs who complete 25 full workdays in day-to-day or short-term substitute assignments  (two half days equal one full day) during the first semester will receive an increased rate of $229 per full day and $135 per half day in the second semester. Certificated subs who travel to Yale Elementary will receive an additional $20 travel bonus per day.

Classified Substitutes: The current rate of pay is $20.25/hr for Paraprofessional substitutes, $21.09/hr for Diverse Support Paraprofessional (DSP) substitutes, $19.12/hr for Food Service substitutes, $22.45/hr for Custodial substitutes and $20.40/hr for Secretary substitutes. Successful candidates will be required to submit to an employee-paid background check.
