In the last two weeks, I attended two legal conferences. The first was a one day conference put on by WASA with excellent information shared on the Legal Issues, Focusing on HR. In this training, we went over the hiring process, investigations, employee performance processes, and misconduct processes. There were several big takeaways in the investigation process that I have implemented. It also gave me a better lens in looking at our job postings and evaluation process so I can make our postings more clear and uniform and connect them to the evaluation process to help employees be more successful.
The second was a two-day legal conference put on by WSPA. This had multiple sessions each day that addressed subjects like public records act, supervision of students in athletics, sexual harassment and freedom of speech. The classes are taught by lawyers who specialize in school law and give very practical ideas as well as legal insights. I am able to download the notes from all of the sessions so I forward those on to others in the district who may benefit.
Each of these conferences helps me to make informed decisions in my job. In the second conference, I was able to connect with other HR staff and brainstorm or share ideas of how things are done in our districts which is very helpful.
