Memorandum
Here are a few of the highlights in CTE at WMS and WHS over the past month:
Business/Marketing
FBLA State:
A total of eight students placed at the SW Regional FBLA Conference and competed at the State Conference on April 19-22nd. We, unfortunately, did not place at State this year, but students made the best of it! They supported fellow FBLA members from other schools and had a blast during our Chapter Dinner and Chapter Fun Night. Students also attended seminars and learned about many things from being a successful entrepreneur to learning how to deal with burnout.
Auto Shop/Welding
Students in automotive maintenance have completed their Chevrolet 5.7l and our Ford 4.6l engine is nearing completion. Our welding classes have removed the cab off of a donated Ford Ranger and are custom designing the rat rod frame to fit the cab at this time. Students have also been working on staff vehicles along with personal vehicles with everything as far as removing engines and transmissions, fuel pumps, water pumps, steering components, etc..
Horticulture
Mrs. Vetter and 3 of her FFA members traveled to Pullman for the Washington State FFA convention in May for their recognition for placing 7th in state. The FFA Plant Sale was a huge success! 300 Hanging baskets were sold as well as over 1500 tomato plants (33 varieties) and various other plants/vegetables – including 10 varieties of peppers.
Medical Science/Biology
HOSA will be conducting another blood drive on May 24th.
Family and Consumer Science Education
STATE CHAMPION TEAM!
Woodland's SkillsUSA team earned the gold medal for Chapter of Excellence this year at State Conference. This award is given for the chapter that excels in personal, workplace and technical skills. Woodland was the only gold medal in this for the state of Washington.
We also had students be very successful in individual and team competitions. Carinda Washburn earned gold in Customer Service and Daphne Mendoza earned gold in Pin Design, which is a public speaking competition. Both students and Mrs. Miller will be flying to Louisville Kentucky on June 18th for the National SkillsUSA Conference.
Our Community Service Team made up of Carinda Washburn, Deja Peterson, and Stefanee Baker Placed third. Stefanee Baker also earned a third place for Early Childhood.
WMS Horticulture
Horticulture class and the garden club have finished the community garden and it is planted and growing. We should be able to bring our first vegetables to the Woodland Food Bank before the end of school. We are recycling products where we can. We are using tires for our potatoes and our gourd crop. We have started a compost operation and will have several yards of organic compost by the end of summer.
