Medical Science Program and HOSA
Our Medical Science class and HOSA club are busily getting ready for the blood drive on Friday. HOSA just elected officers for this year and are planning for competitions.
Business Program
Career Choices: So far this year, students have heard from two different guest speakers - one in the health industry and another in business.
Rena Chayanam works in labor and delivery and shared with our students her personal journey and career journey that has brought her to her current success.
Tadd Miller, an entrepreneur, and his business partner came and presented about apparel business "Rookie Rise." They discussed all their challenges and accomplishments as they continue to build their brand. They even gave away free apparel items to the entire class.
We are planning on bringing in more guest speakers as well as take students on field trips to experience different work environments for different careers. Look for a student written article in our online student newspaper that talks a little bit more about Career Choices and our guest speakers.
Marketing: October was a busy month for marketing students. This is the 3rd year the class took on the project of creating spirit week shirts for the student body. Students took one week to design shirts for each spirit day, a week to promote the shirts and take orders, and another week to make the shirts in house and deliver them to each student or staff member who purchased shirts.
FBLA: Our FBLA students had the opportunity to attend the Southwest Region Fall Leadership Conference on Friday, October 25th at LCC. Students heard from two very successful keynote speakers: (1) Alison Magyar - Entrepreneur and founder of Hubb, along with (2) Mike Acker - a public speaker who focuses on helping others build self-confidence. Students participated in workshops, networked with other FBLA members, and learned valuable leadership skills. Our Woodland FBLA students are ready and excited to begin working on their competitive events for their first competition at the Regional SW WA Leadership Conference.
Family and Consumer Science Program
Culinary Arts: Students are finishing up their sauces unit and starting to prepare for two caterings coming up. All students have passed their safety tests with 100% and have valid food handler cards.
Early Childhood Ed: Several of the High School students have expressed an interest in becoming elementary school teachers and have demonstrated a real knack for working with young children. The class is preparing for our annual preschool pumpkin pie lab.
SkillsUSA: Five of our officers (Jasmine Erickson, David Riley, Caitlin Nelson, Nansi Valenzuela and Katelyn Paulson) attended leadership training at Cispus. Our two State Officers, Nansi and Katelyn, helped to run sessions. Students learned about teamwork, SkillsUSA Chapter of Excellence, accepting others, how to run meetings and the duties of each office.
State Farm Insurance is sending two agents to do a customer service training on November 13. All other CTSO’s have been invited.
Our chapter will be running the H.S. Food Drive November 18-21.
Skilled and Technical Trades Program
Automotive maintenance: Students have been working hard on cleaning, measuring, installing new parts, and rebuilding two Chevrolet 5.7L V-8s, one Ford inline 6, one Ford 390 V-8, and one Ford 4.0L V-6 engine.
Auto/welding club: Members worked on a BMW 530I overheat and battery drain problem. They had to disassemble the left side and front of the motor to fix/replace tubing/hoses, water pump, fan, and thermostat. That fixed the overheating issue and they found a bad relay under the dash that was the battery drain problem.
Metals: Students have been practicing gas welding and ARC welding and are starting to be able to make their own projects.
Horticulture Program
FFA: Five FFA Members participated in the District 8 Leadership Camp on Oct. 22 at Castle Rock Fairgrounds. Students participated in leadership workshops and collaborated and networked with Chapters around the region. Elisabeth Patnode, Woodland Chapter President, and District 8 Officer, led her first series of workshops.
Members hosted a pumpkin carving party Oct. 30.
Two of the FFA State Officers visited the Ag Classes Nov. 13 discussing the future of Ag in Washington, career opportunities, and conducting leadership activities.
Horticulture students are exploring Value Added Products and Point of Purchase Products through researching and creating hypertufa pots with succulents for the spring plant sale.
Floral Shop students sold 10 autumn pumpkin arrangements before Halloween, multiple birthday and "just because" wraps, as well as the annual autumn elementary school luncheon centerpieces.
