Re: December 2025 Board Report

Family and Community Resource Center

Joni Meize has begun to return to work! I will be meeting with Joni weekly to begin the transition of FCRC duties from Lindsay Noble back to Joni. I want to thank Lindsay for stepping in and making FCRC run smoothly in addition to her work as the Student Engagement Coordinator.

The FCRC continues to be a central point of support for our families, especially during the holiday season. We've been busy helping families with essential needs and connecting them to community resources. As we have in the past few school years, we've partnered with Rotary on Christmas Giving. We worked with the District Interpreter, Vanessa Alejo-Barragan, to call families and verify their interest in the Rotary Christmas Giving program.

Highly Capable Program

The Highly Capable program is continuing to follow best practices in both identifying and serving our students. The annual referral window for identification as highly capable will open in January 2026. This window allows students, staff, and families to refer students for consideration.

K-12 Attendance (Student Engagement)

Attendance efforts continue to focus on engaging students and addressing chronic absence. Truancy conference notifications are mailed home and Lindsay Noble follows up with students and families to try to identify and remove barriers to student engagement in school.

K-12 Health Services

Our nursing staff is vital in managing the daily health needs of our students and keeping all health documentation current. Health staff see students daily for routine care and for minor and major injuries/illnesses. We are so grateful to have four health room staff, one for each of our larger schools.

We continue to complete hearing and vision screens for new students and students who were absent during initial screenings. We are current with all medications and immunization paperwork for the district.

LAP Program

The LAP program is continuing to focus on providing targeted intervention and monitoring student growth. Students continue to work in specific reading groups and student progress is monitored. We look forward to collecting students’ January 2026 data to assess student growth and adjust grouping and educational programming as needed.

Lewis River Academy

Lewis River Academy (LRA) is focused on supporting student success in our alternative learning environment and we have grown since the beginning of the school year as we serve a need for an alternative to the main schools. We currently have 52 students enrolled in LRA, 22 in K-5 and 30 in grades 6-8. Teachers and students continue to have two-way correspondence at least once per school week. As is part of our school goal, we are doing monthly check-in meetings with families and students; this is proving to have a positive impact on student achievement.

Multilingual Learners Program

The Multilingual Learners' Department hosted a Latino Family Night on Thursday and it was a great success, drawing approximately 100 participants. A vital component of the evening was the participation of 14 community groups, which provided valuable resources to our families. Additionally, school staff dedicated time to ensure that families were equipped with the knowledge and support to effectively access important district communication and information systems, including Skyward, Talking Points, the Family Resource Center and KWRL. We had approximately 20 staff members from Woodland Middle School come to the event to help with childcare and connect with our Multilingual Learners' families.

Special Services

The Special Education Department is actively ensuring compliance and proper funding for students with special needs. Our December count shows we have over 400 students identified for and receiving special education services. The department is organizing our work to review and seek reimbursement for high cost IEPs through the Safety Net submissions process, due mid-March 2026.

Nichole Lester, the administrative secretary who supports all of these programs, has resigned from her position. We posted a part-time, temporary secretary position and went through the interview and reference checking process. I am happy to report that Cindy Hapala has accepted our offer of the part-time, temporary position! Cindy will work each school day from 7:30 am to 11:30 am in the District Office.
