RE: Woodland Middle School Board Report

School Improvement Plan

  • Instructional Design Days
    • We have 3 teachers who are new to both WMS and 6th-grade ELA. We used roll over teacher PD funds to pay for substitute teachers so they could have a day to plan and work together. The day was so productive and helpful, we plan to do it for all of our grade level core content areas, starting in January. The purpose of these days are:
      • Work on horizontal alignment and common expectations/assessments
      • Review data and determine next steps in the classroom
      • Get PD on AVID best practices, such as Interactive Notebooks
  • Upcoming iReady Testing
    • We will be doing mid-year iReady testing in January, which will give us a good idea of how we are progressing on our academic goals.
  • Behavior update
    • We are currently averaging 8.5% fewer referrals per day, compared with the first 70 days of last school year.
    • The first week back from Winter Break, we will have an expectations ‘Reset.’ This means we will review common problem areas with everyone in the school, such as bathrooms and the cafeteria.
    • 5% of our student population (roughly 37 students) account for more than 55% of all of the referrals written for the year. A little over 10% of our students have 79% of the referrals.
    • On a positive note: more than 73% of the students in the school have 0 referrals! 90% of our students have 2 or fewer referrals.

Recognition

Building a Sense of Community:

On Friday, December 5, WMS had two students participate in the ‘Rolling Blazers’ exhibition game, a wheelchair basketball game that was played between the high school double header. It looked like we had more middle school students and teachers there for a 15-minute game than the high school for a double header! We had two student sections, and you should have seen how they reacted when our students had the ball on the court. The sense of community is strong at the middle school, but we know that we can continue to grow it.

Upcoming Events

AVID Family Night - Wednesday, January 14, from 5:00-6:30 pm. AVID from the high school will also be joining us.
