Re: WMS March 2022 Board Report
The following are the items we have been working on at Woodland Middle School:
STATE ASSESSMENTS
We will begin our SBA state assessments on April 18th this year. Unlike previous years, most of the testing will be done in the classroom on Chromebooks during the core period that aligns with the test.
We have chosen to complete the testing in classrooms to limit the disruption to learning and shorten the window for state testing. Here is the tentative schedule:
ATHLETICS
Track begins on March 28th and we are excited to begin recruiting students. This will be an awesome opportunity to compete and enjoy company outside, especially with the reduced Covid mandates at the state level.
STUDENT CHARACTER AND RECOGNITION
Our WMS ASB and staff wanted to create ways to recognize students each week and highlight positive character traits. Therefore, we have been hosting “pop-up” carts that rove around the school during a period each week or two and target a specific trait. For example, they pop into a classroom and ask the teacher for a student that demonstrates respect or hard work. The student is selected, recognized in front of peers, and gets to come into the hall and choose a treat from the cart.
Additionally, we continue to try to catch students doing the right thing. They are given tickets and recognized for their efforts. These tickets can be used at our student store to purchase treats, toys, drinks, etc. We also have “Wheel Wednesdays” where students are randomly selected to spin a wheel of prizes during lunchtime to bring some excitement to their day.
FORECASTING COMING SOON
When we return from Spring Break, students will be forecasting for electives for the next school year. Counselors will visit 5th, 6th, and 7th-grade science classes to go over the elective choices and descriptions. These choices can also be found on the middle school website. Students will forecast electronically on their Chromebooks for electives. We will also be forecasting with next year’s fifth graders later in April.
