Current COVID-19 Data and Reopening Status

The spread of COVID-19 in our community has shown a significant increase over the last few weeks.  This Chart shows the curve increasing.   The State and County Health professionals consider several metrics in guiding their recommendations regarding school opening.  1) the 14-day case count per 100,000 population, and 2) the Test Positivity rate.   Both have been increasing.

In August the board adopted a reopening plan and adopted a revised plan in October.  This plan addresses movement from stage 1 to stage 2, stage 2 to stage 3, and stage 3 to stage 4 but does not contemplate movement in the opposite direction with the growing case numbers we see today.

Working closely with Cowlitz County Department of Health and Human Services (CCHHS) Medical Director, Dr. Steven Krager, and reviewing current data on the relative risks associated with offering the hybrid model with significant attention to safety precautions the Superintendent is recommending that the district continue offering the current hybrid model for K-4 students, but that the model not be expanded to the middle school or high school levels.

The superintendent will review information on the safety measures employed and the success teachers are seeing in the classrooms.  He will review the recommendations of CCHHS in this week's Schools Report.
