RE: Columbia Elementary Board Report

K-4 Woodland Reads:

    • This year, CES partnered with NFES and YES to participate in "Woodland Reads." Woodland Reads is a program where K-4 students read one chapter a night out of the same chapter book. This year's book was titled "The Life According to Humphrey." The Life According to Humphrey is a story about a hamster who is a class pet inside an elementary classroom. Various CES staff members agreed to read and record a chapter for students who rather listen to the story rather than read it independently. The book was offered and recorded in both Spanish and English. CES had multiple classrooms absorb the activity within their daily instruction to assure that no student missed out on this opportunity. CES also purchased a "School Pet." A hamster by the name of Harry-- a cousin to Humphrey.
    • Each night students in grades K-4 had a single comprehension question around the daily chapter. CES partnered with Woodland's Masonic Lodge who decided to donate 4 new bicycles to CES. A student from each grade level was drawn randomly and awarded a brand new bike.

2020-2021 End of the Year Wrap Up:

    • CES is in the middle of planning its upcoming culminating activities. Currently, we are planning activities such as a K-4 Field Day, Kindergarten Graduation/Parade, and a special parting activity for our 4th-grade students. As we get closer to these dates, we will be sharing additional information.
    • Academically we are starting our end-of-the-year assessments. Assessments such as ELPA, iReady, and Acadenience are a few that have started or will be starting over the next few weeks.
    • Scheduling for the 2021-2022 school year is also in full force. CES is working on finding ways to maximize instruction time and fill the "holes" created from distance learning.

Teacher Appreciation Week:

    • Teacher appreciation week was May 3-7. CES partnered with Grand Canyon University, Woodland Education Association, and the Woodland PTSA to help celebrate our wonderful teachers. CES is and continues to be blessed with such a wonderful staff.
