Re: CTE

31st Annual WHS FFA (virtual) Plant Sale April 21-May 6

Students maintained, labeled, and managed plants, created and maintained inventory spreadsheets, packaged orders to specification, delivered orders, helped customers with their orders, created marketing and social media posts, problem-solved, worked as a part of a team and independently.

Sahara McPoland competed in the FFA State Creed event on May 1st and placed  . . . .(I won't know until Saturday night).

Kanden Hendrickson is acting as the Woodland Chapter FFA State Delegate at the (virtual) State Convention on May 10-15.

SkillsUSA

State Champion!!!!

Caleb Mouat earned the state champion title in both Prepared Speech and Extemporaneous Speech at SkillsUSA virtual state competition. He will now move on to compete at nationals in Extemporaneous Speech (can only compete in one). Both Caitlin Nelson (ASL) and Oliver Rosa (Technical Drafting) competed however, they did not place in the medals so we will find out how they place in another week or two.

Early Childhood Ed. students are starting the Reducing the Risk curriculum (only one student opted out).

Culinary Arts just completed making homemade pasta and sauce and will complete the unit with rice pilaf and risotto. It is a true joy to have students back in the classroom and working together in the kitchens.

Web Design

Throughout this course, students have been learning how to develop a website by coding in HTML and CSS. They have also been testing their skills by taking the Microsoft Technology Associate - Intro to Programming using HTML and CSS Industry Exam. Each time students have taken the industry exam, their scores have improved and they are well on their way to being industry certified in HTML and CSS by the end of this semester.

Marketing

Students are currently working on their final project for the school year, and are creating and developing their own store. This involves developing brand elements, packaging and labeling elements, developing the store front, store layout, store interior, and interior displays.

Leadership/Project Management

With almost all students back at the high school, leadership students have been looking forward to bringing back a little bit of normalcy to our school culture. They have separated into committees and are developing plans to hold a spirit week towards the end of May. Students are working hard on developing themed dress-up days for each day, class competitions that are in line with COVID protocols, and ways to promote this event to gain as much student and staff participation as possible.

Financial Fitness

So far this school year, students have learned how to develop S.M.A.R.T. financial goals, developed a budget sheet and balance sheet, created a resume, participated in mock interviews, completed tax forms, played the Stock Market Game (real time), and learned about retirement plans and investing for their future. Next students will be learning about debits and credits, along with housing and real estate. What better way to prepare our students than have them take a personal finance class with an instructor that can lead students in-class activities/discussions and provide them with the knowledge needed for their future, regardless of what path they choose to take.

Retail Operations

Our retail operations student has been working hard on developing a new marketing plan for our custom apparel business and student store. She has analyzed our current product mix and has been conducting primary and secondary research to develop a new product line or expand upon our current product line. This last week, she has even pressed new plant sale staff shirts that can be seen on volunteers at this year's WHS Plant Sale.

Publications

This year's Publications Staff is small but mighty. Students have been working very hard on developing a yearbook for a historic school year. New and interesting topics will be found in the 2020-2021 yearbook that many students will enjoy as they look back and reminisce on their high school years.

Future Business Leaders of America

This year has been a difficult and challenging year, but our FBLA members did not let that stop them. They have completed three (3) national challenges: Super Sweeps, Non-Stop November, and Action Awareness. They even hosted a virtual spirit week for FBLA week and CTSO month. Each national challenge pushed our members to develop their business and service skills. They attended the Virtual Fall Leadership Conference and attended many seminars and workshops. They competed at the SW Regional Leadership Conference and seven (7) of our members moved on to compete at the State Leadership Conference. All but one out of the seven students are new to FBLA this year, and well on their way to making it to nationals next year!

Skilled and Technical

The welding classes have been designing and making objects to be 3D printed, laser engraved, and CNC plasma cut. The automotive classes have been 12-volt wiring, working on engines, learning how to mount and dismount tires on rims and balancing tires, and learning about brakes, suspension, and steering.
