Re: August/September Review

Here is an overview of the key activities we worked on in relation to teaching and learning this month.

Staff development and Mondays: We had six very productive days before school started to work with our staff on preparing for the upcoming school year.  We used two of the days to implement a school wide expectation to use Google Classroom in all of our classes.  We were trained on school safety features, including hearing from the first responders from the horrific Marysville shooting.    Our school improvement plan, Monday work and even a bus field trip showing our staff around Woodland occupied some of our time too. We also learned more about our new staff and held our Nuts and Bolts meeting.  Overall, it was a great use of our time and great way to start the school year.

Other information:  I am pleased that we have added AP Computer science to our curriculum and we have 15 students enrolled in this inaugural course being taught primarily by volunteers.  Mr. Huddleston is the teacher of record in the class each day, but Jim Darden, Steve Rippl and Sarah Gilliam are the wonderful volunteers making this class go!  We have also added American Sign Language II to the curriculum with three sections of students. I’m also very excited about our new Freshman academy which includes the work of Mr. Cowley, Ms. Holmes, and Mr. Nesbitt working together with roughly 75 freshmen to integrate their curriculums.  The early results have been excellent with students feeling a strong connection between classes and a real sense of belong to our school.

Overall, it has been a really smooth first few weeks of school and we all feel very settled.
