RE: Student Representative Report

Hot Topics:

  • Advisory change
    • Last year the school decided to change advisory from after 6th period (which was in effect for just one year) to now after 2nd period. This isn’t a popular change with the students for numerous reasons. To briefly summarize the main points of the students’ argument we are concerned with how this impacts our education, how dramatically the Cascadia Tech Students and Running Start students are affected, how athletes are affected and how the school is now more disconnected as ever. ASB is working alongside Mr. Shoup and Mr. Uhlenkott to try to come to some sort of understanding or agreement
  • After school dances/activities
    • To increase school spirit and to increase attendance at games. ASB is working alongside Mr. Uhlenkott to try to make this possible while keeping in mind board and school rules.
  • The scheduling of volleyball and soccer games
    • Both volleyball and soccer games are almost always set at the same time and place making it impossible for the girls on both teams to support each other and for one sport to have any sort of student attendance. It is causing a divide between not only the teams but the teams vs the student population.

Things That are Going Well:

  • Free ASB cards this year & the benefits of that
    • This year ASB decided to cover the costs of ASB cards for the entire school population. This decision has come with many benefits. For one, student attendance has spiked at games and is expected to rise at other events where you can get it free or get a discount when having an ASB (plays, dances, etc). This change is also making it so that a more diverse student population is involved in school sanctioned activities. It isn’t just athletes coming to sporting and school events anymore! Overall, this change is bringing the WHS community together more and is tearing down some walls between different student populations. I am very proud of this change and very excited to see where it takes school pride and spirit at WHS.
