Adoption of Social Studies Textbooks

To: Michael Green, Superintendent of Woodland School District

From: Asha Riley

Date: April 17, 2018

Text Adoption Recommendations:

The Text Adoption Committee recommends adoptions of the following books for use in social studies classes at the Intermediate and Middle School.

Washington, Our Home - Fourth Grade

Washington, Our Home includes seven chapters that align fully with the Washington State Social Studies Learning Standards and Grade Level Expectations for Grade 4. The new edition covers Washington’s history from its beginnings through the treaty-making period and statehood. Each chapter begins with a Big Question and a “Washington Story” and ends with a social studies skill activity and a primary source analysis. Teacher materials available for this program include a Teacher Guide, Lesson Activities book, ELL Support Guide, Chapter Assessments book, and a USB Thumb Drive.

TCI Geography Alive - 7th Grade

TCI Geography Alive Regions and People by Diane Hart was developed in collaboration with the National Council for Geographic Education. The middle school social studies subcommittee reviewed the content and are confident it aligns with 7th-grade social studies standards students in Woodland Public Schools are expected to learn.  The content is provided in a user-friendly and engaging format, written at a 7th-grade reading level. The program also provides a wide array of instructional support materials, including online and interactive elements.
