Re:  Special Services Report

News from Woodland Intermediate School ELL Program:

They were able to start ELL services after the 2nd week of school this year.  This is the earliest we have ever been able to do because Tier 3 was implemented immediately!  Students were happy to return and excited about the new, large, corner classroom (used to be the art classroom). For the first time this year, we nominated student interpreters to help translate for Spanish-speaking families for our character trait assembly. The students were natural leaders and were excellent at making our parents feeling welcomed. Students are also enthusiastic to attend our very engaging Homework Club. This year any 3rd or 4th grade ELL student will have a spot because we are dedicating Wednesdays for all our 3rd graders and Thursdays for all our 4th graders. Our primary focus in Homework Club is on community building and vocabulary enrichment. It began October 19th.  We currently have 13 3rd graders and 16 4th graders attending.   They recently did a lesson where they read the book From Here to There by Margery Cuyler. First, it describes Maria, then her family, then the street she lives, town, country, continent, and so forth. Then as a class, they created a flipbook that parallels the story. The class learns the difference between a city, state, country, and planet. They also learn what city, state, and the country they live in. We again want to give a big shout out to KWRL for providing the creative solution to provide bussing for the students from Homework Club.
