Woodland PreK-4 (Primary and Intermediate) School: One School - Two Buildings
2-4 Playground Equipment Update
The staff at our 2-4 building (WIS) spent time researching a variety of playground structures appropriate for 2nd - 4th grade students. On November 17th, a bid was provided by Buell Recreation for three different structures. The quotes were for the materials only and did not include unloading, installation, ground preparation, and / or surface material to help prevent injury. Prices for these materials ranged from $23k - $60k. Then in early December, American Parks Company advertised for a ½ off sale on playground equipment. A quote was provided on December 8th for equipment, safety flooring and installation for $90k. The structure alone is normally $72k and is currently on sale until Dec. 15th for $35k. Scott Landrigan is currently working with American Parks Company for additional quotes and is researching vendors that might be willing to install the safety flooring at a lower rate than American Parks Company. We are also currently researching additional funding sources that might help offset the large expense. Lastly, we are aiming for installation of any playground equipment to take place over spring break.

Focus on Learning
K-5th grade lead team teachers collaborated on Dec. 8th and 9th to deconstruct the Washington Learning Standards and identified power/essential standards to be used in defining a guaranteed and viable curriculum. A guaranteed and viablecurriculum is based on a clear list of essential outcomes and is our number one opportunity to raise the level of student achievement. These priority standards are a carefully selected subset of the total list of the grade-specific and course-specific standards within each content area which students must know and be able to do by the end of each school year in order to be prepared to enter the next grade level or course. We will use this subset of standards as the standards we will guarantee ALL students will know and be able to do at the end of the year. These are the standards we will write our common formative assessments around, provide “time and support” for students who haven’t mastered them, and provide extension for those who already have. The priority standards are:
