Woodland Intermediate School
Monthly Update
September, 2012
Open House:Open House took place on September 17th. It was a tremendous success. Students participated in a scavenger hunt activity that required them to introduce their parents to each of their teachers and visit strategic locations throughout the school. This activity promotes personal contacts and the development of relationships between staff and parents. Students who completed the scavenger hunt received ice cream at lunch the following day. Approximately 200 WIS students completed the scavenger hunt.
As in years past I started the evening by addressing all parents and students in the gym. Veronica Heller (administrative intern/Spec. Ed. teacher) also delivered information during the presentation. Each grade level was then highlighted in15 minutes increments. The grade level highlights allow families with multiple children attending our school an opportunity to have equal access to all of their children's teachers.
Professional FocusOur professional focus for the month of September included standards based grading and the completion of a staff survey.
Moving from a traditional letter grades based system to a standards based grading system is a tremendous undertaking. Working out small details and educating parents with weekly newsletters has been a focus of our efforts as of late.
The objective of the staff survey is to collect data that will be analyzed as we review and revise our Schoolwide Plan for this year. WIS parents were also requested to complete a similar survey for the same purpose.
