RE:                 WPS MONTHLY UPDATE

As our first month of school closes, there is plenty going on around WPS!

Common Core Math Standards
As I am sure Mrs. Riley will report on, our district went all out to take advantage of some advance training on what new National Math Standards are likely to look like.  We are being told that this is the next "real big" thing in our profession and has ramifications for our instructional practices, habits of thinking, and assessment of student learning.

We were so fortunate to benefit from OUTSTANDING work by Mrs. Riley in networking and arranging for a Math expert who is deeply involved in the Common Core development to spend two days with us!  Mr. Jacob Bruno also just happens to be a resident of Woodland....................his connection with our teaching staff was terrific - we truly experienced learning not available to other districts of our size and larger at this point in the Common Core roll-out.

C.A.S.T.
As I update you, we are just beginning a week of meeting as a Collaborative Academic Support Team at WPS.  Remember this is the process where we bring all of our academic and other data to the table for review and collaboration among our teachers, and school support folks.  Each student's progress is reviewed in our conversations, the product of which is planning for the learning needs of each.

Dogs/Pies and Books
Our annual Fall Open House went very well with Burgerville on hand to cook hot dog dinners, families bringing pies for dessert, book sale going on in the gym, and most importantly, students showing parents their classrooms!

PTSA did all the planning and background work, and food was donated by Safeway, Frito-Lay, and Burgerville - we thank them all for their support and partnering!

Fall Student/Parent Conferences October 16-19
And in keeping with our commitment to earliest, most proactive collaboration possible with families; we will be hosting Conferences this month.
