Highly Capable Screening: The primary and intermediate schools are in the process of a K-4 universal screening to identify students who demonstrate the characteristics of highly capable learners. All children in these grade levels are participating, which allows us to learn more about each learner. The information that comes with the scoring of each screener is a valuable profile of the learning style and individual needs of all students. While this is primarily a tool for identifying which children are appropriate for receiving highly capable services, there is much benefit in terms of student data. This is an incredible opportunity to develop a program that nurtures the potential of these unique learners.
Dual Language and Powerful Instruction: The excitement of planning our new dual language program for next year is inspiring. Examining program elements and exploring effective teaching strategies is resulting in powerful discussions about instruction for all of our learners. The important considerations that are specific to dual language instruction are leading to a more nuanced understanding of what is required to teach children to read, write, think, and problem solve in any language.
This week a team is attending the Washington Association for Bilingual Education Conference in Tacoma. The theme of language, literacy, and learning could not be more timely as WPS staff examine instructional practices closely to make certain our program is of the highest quality. This is a chance for our team to become unified and focused as we embark on this exciting endeavor. More details will be coming in the next weeks, but be confident that the dedication and enthusiasm of this passionate team is resulting in some wonderful first steps.
The Humoctopus and Student Behavior: The events of last week were so unusual that there has been a significant impact on student behavior. While adults quickly recover, some of our fragile learners are not secure at school as a result of this experience. Our compassionate staff is working patiently with children, but it is important to note that our school is not yet back to a normal state of operations. We will certainly work through this soon, but I have great appreciation for our student support team and their extraordinary efforts.
