Monthly Update

May

Throughout the month of May our professional development has been focused in two specific areas. Our first area of focus was Special Services. Mrs. Kernen and multiple representatives from Special Services led an informational meeting pertaining to Special Services, and how students are served in The Woodland School District. The presentation provided much needed clarity and a higher level of understanding in regards to how Special Services operates.

Our second area of focus for the month of May has been student placement for the 2009/2010 school year. Three objectives helped to drive this process.

1. Align student learning styles and personalities with teaching styles and classroom philosophies.

2. Create balanced and equitable classrooms.

3. Honor one of the four requests made on the parent input form (if turned in).

WIS specialist's pre placed students with special needs during the week of May 26th - 29th. On June 1st grade level teams placed all other students into classrooms. The third grade team also visited WIS to place current 3rd grade students into 4th grade classrooms. The 4th grade team placed current 4th grade students into 5th grade classrooms. The 5th grade team placed current 5th grade students into 6th grade classrooms.

Throughout the month of May our Building Leadership Team has been teaming with me to develop the WIS budget for the 2009/2010 school year. This has proven to be a rewarding and educational process for staff members. They now have a much greater understand of our budget, how it works, and the continued need for fiscal responsibility.

Staffing for the 2009/2010 school year has also been an area of focus during the month of May. WIS is receiving a smaller class of students (136) from WPS and passing on a larger class of 6th grade students to WMS. I am very excited about having Allison Daun transitioning from the 4th to 6th grade. Allison will be a wonderful addition to the 6th grade team.
