Re: WMS December 2020 Board Report

The following are the key initiatives/items that are happening at Woodland Middle School:

  • PBIS Student Recognition
  • Sock Drive
  • Bird feeders for the elderly
  • PTSA
  • Counseling Clubs

PBIS Recognition

During October and November, we have encouraged more than 90% of WMS students by recognizing them as “Student of the Week” in one or more of their classes. They get a shout-out at the beginning of class each Monday and are entered into a drawing for a local Woodland business gift certificate.

The winners for 11/16, 11/23, and 11/30 are:

  • 5th Grade- Barrett Conder, Adalyn Stephenson, Maxim Ishin
  • 6th Grade- Emma Barrow, Ryan Jensen, Kylie Barragan
  • 7th Grade- Marissa Lindberg, Anthony Terriquez-Rodriguez, Ari Asher
  • 8th Grade- Chase Hall, Couly McReynolds, Sophia Speranza

Sock Drive

During October, our WMS staff participated in an event called "Socktober." The 7/8 Leadership class initiated the sock drive after watching a video about the idea of "Socktober" and socks being one of the least donated items in America. The WMS staff was able to donate over 100 pairs of socks in a little over a week! All of the socks collected were given to the Woodland Action Center for our neighbors in need this season.

Bird Feeders

Our staff is currently working with the Woodland Convalescent Center for a bird feeder drive. Our ASB Adviser, Emily Swett, reached out on behalf of our Leadership class. They wanted to provide small gifts to seniors in the convalescent home for Christmas. After speaking to the facility director, she said their biggest need at the time is bird feeders and birdseed. Residents have spent a large amount of time in their rooms with Covid and enjoy watching the birds come to their windows. She told Mrs. Swett not every resident has a bird feeder of their own, and they are going through a lot of birdseed. At this time, we're collecting both feeders and seed in our office. Members of the National Honor Society at WHS have also reached out to help and take part in this drive.

PTSA

We are excited to announce that we had over 20 staff members join the PTSA this school year.  Staff really wanted to be supportive and contribute since we were unable to do our regular fundraisers and activities so far this year.

Counseling Clubs

This is a great opportunity for our counselors (Ben Nelson and Garrett DeGraaff) to build relationships and support students by:

  • Talking with students about their week and anything interesting they want to share.
  • Having a fun themed quiz for the week (Thanksgiving, Teacher trivia, Christmas, etc.) where students compete for a $5 gift card.
  • Providing a mental health tip of the week (topics have included decreasing screen time, creating healthy sleep habits, how to practice thankfulness and generosity, etc.). The tip is presented, and they have a conversation about it.  During the week, this tip is also posted to Google Classroom, allowing for interaction if there are questions or messages for the counselor.
  • Staying after the club to talk with small groups along with question and answer time.
  • Reaching out individually as they have seen more students begin to struggle emotionally.

Average Counseling Club attendance per week:

5th Grade: 16-18 students (42 signed up)

6th Grade: 15-17 students (38 signed up)

7th Grade: 10-15 students (15 signed up)

8th Grade: 10-15 students (19 signed up)
