WORKSHOP

Elementary School Reconfiguration

The current elementary school reconfiguration is moving forward smoothly and quickly, but there are a few key decisions that the school board needs to review and finalize.

First, the school board reviewed the three models of transportation: our current model, a new single run model, and a new double run model. Based on the data from Shannon Barnett, Director of Transportation, it was very clear to the board that the double run model would be optimal. Students would be picked up and delivered directly to the elementary schools. Buses will then return to route and pick up the older students to be delivered to WMS and WHS. The new model reduces the average bus ride by as much as forty-one minutes for students.

Second, the directors reviewed the proposed bell schedule. The bell schedule and transportation are inter-related. With the double run transportation model, the buses need to have a minimum of sixty minutes in between the two runs. The directors reviewed the pros and cons of elementary starting first or secondary starting first. It was decided that the elementary schools would have the early start time.

Third, the board of directors provided feedback at first reading of a new policy for district attendance area transfers. (Policy 3131) A few modifications will be made and the policy be presented at the January 28th board meeting for final review and approval.

Forth, Superintendent Green explained that exploration and planning is underway for the specialized K-4 programs. More information will be presented and proposed at a later date.

Lastly, Michael Green recommended a process for renaming the two downriver elementary schools, beginning with the release of a community survey to brainstorm ideas of new names for the elementary schools. The school board liked the suggestion so the survey will be released to the public shortly. The top options will be present to the school board for final approval in February.
