Re: WMS February 2018 Board Report

The following are the key happenings at Woodland Middle School:

Junior Achievement Field Trip

One of the topics covered during 7th grade Social Studies is financial literacy. Using materials from Junior Achievement and other resources, students learn about credit and debit cards, banking services, credit scores, budgeting, and more. The culminating activity is a field trip to Junior Achievement’s Finance Park, where students are given a real “life situation” and must create a budget that meets all their needs. The students find this experience fun but challenging. As one student said, “It’s hard to be an adult.”

Home Depot Grant

Joe Bosch recently applied and was awarded a $5000 Home Depot grant for a joint venture with his horticulture classes and garden club. It will focus on the following key areas:

  • Horticulture-Seed germination, Plant propagation, Hydroponics, Greenhouse management, Garden planning, Soil testing, Soil treatment, Organic gardening, Irrigation and watering techniques, and Utilization of cover crops.
  • STEM- Design, Building, Hydroponics, and Irrigation.
  • CTE- Job responsibility, Leadership, and the Business of running a greenhouse.
  • Garden Club- Club members will be managing the garden as a community resource.  Students will meet weekly after spring break, throughout the summer and into the beginning of the fall for the final harvesting.

Pride Night at WMS

The WMS Title I program is busy getting ready for PRIDE Parent Night which will take place Thursday, March 1st from 5-7pm.  We look forward to engaging families through fun and informative sessions put on by WMS staff and booths put on by community and school programs.  Families will also enjoy the popular dinner and auction!  Students/families earn tickets by participating in sessions and speaking with representatives from the booths. Several local businesses and staff members have donated time and/or raffle prizes to this special event.  We are looking forward to having fun this evening connecting with families and learning together.
