RE: Monthly Report Woodland Primary School (Grades PreK-1)

School Improvement Plan Review: The WPS Building Leadership Team recently completed a comprehensive audit of our school improvement plan implementation. It is expected that changes and adjustments must be made periodically, and this has certainly been the case this year. Some objectives have been met well ahead of schedule, while other areas are no longer as high of a priority. We are energized by the significant progress made, so have adjusted some goals to increase targets as appropriate.

Part of this review process has been to include all staff members in the assessment and planning of the next steps for instruction at WPS. To this end, we have all participated in a very creative and innovative experience where we dream about the characteristics of the most highly performing school we can imagine. This includes instruction, professional learning, the climate and culture, and community involvement. Several common themes have emerged, and we will combine this with a whole staff data carousel to make choices about high-leverage strategies and initiatives for the end of this year and beginning of next school year. This process ensures that our District-Directed Professional Development (DDPD) days are as productive as possible and that instructional opportunities are maximized due to extensive planning and intentionality.

Staff Safety and Special Programs: There has been an increased attention to the accurate reporting of staff injuries at WPS. In partnership with Jake Hall and Scott Landrigan, I have insisted that staff report each time they are injured while performing their duties. For example, sometimes a child might hit a person many times over the course of a day.  This data is critical, as it allows us to carefully monitor both the frequency and severity of these situations. Unfortunately, several of our WPS students receiving special services struggle with cognitive delays, traumatic brain injuries, autism, and self-regulation. For these reasons, some injuries are simply unavoidable. Careful programming and ongoing staff training can help, but you may notice an expected increase in injury reports moving forward. This is essential data, and ongoing monitoring and adjusting will continue in an effort to mitigate these occurrences.
