Re: December 2017 Board Report

Woodland School District’s learning supports and alternatives have been busy in December and preparing for 2018!

English Language Learners/Bilingual Program

This month we wrapped up state assessment accommodations for students who do not have English as their primary language. We discussed how we can identify more ELL students who are Highly Capable.

Family and Community Resource Center

The Family Community Resource Center received 34 visits from households needing resources last month.  From November 15 to December 13, we provided 78 resource referrals to outside agencies and gave out 68 basic needs resources.  We coordinated a meeting with all the Christmas Giving programs in town to ensure each child that is in need received Holiday support.  Important partnerships this month included the Clark County Fire Association who donated to our program.  We also reached out to the AARP Foundation and the Housing Resource Center to schedule free aid with tax filings in Woodland for our families.   On December 13, the Department of Commerce will be making a site visit to offer support for the Homeless Student Stability Program.  To date there have been 50 referrals made to our partner, Love Overwhelming.  Love Overwhelming has found permanent housing for 1 family and prevented 8 families from homelessness.

Highly Capable Program

5th and 6th graders in Hi-C class are focusing on Science Olympiads.  Teams of students are busy studying and designing models for their events.  It is great to see them working so hard.  The Science Olympiads competition is March 3rd, 2018.

K-12 Attendance

To date this school year, Stacy Mouat has conducted BECCA conferences with 124 students/parents.  Stacy leads weekly conferences/communication with parents/students for any student with 3+ unexcused absences.  Stacy and the schools are continuing to meet regularly with students on active Truancy Petitions.

LAP Program

WIS teachers are currently goal setting and looking at student growth with their students using the iReady growth monitoring reports. We know that a very high leverage instructional strategy is goal setting with students and having students monitoring their own progress.  Students and staff are looking forward to our January iReady diagnostic so we can celebrate growth and set new goals for the remainder of the year.  LAP student data will be reviewed and adjustments made to educational programming per the data.

Lewis River Academy

We live in a world surrounded by technology and we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on maximizing technology.  To help with this, on December 6th, LRA joined in on the largest world-wide learning event in history, The Hour of Code.  This Hour of Code workshop was a huge success with students of all ages and with all levels of experience joining in for a fun hour learning how to write computer code.  This was just an introduction with two more coding opportunities coming up in January 2018.

Christmas Cards for student ~ On October 9, a former LRA student was seriously injured when hit by a wrong-way driver on I-5 as they were returning home from Clark College.  The student has undergone many surgeries and has a long recovery ahead of them.  With Christmas approaching, we thought it would be nice for LRA students and families to write a simple note of encouragement.  We will mail all the cards together for the student and their family.

Nurse Services

Health staff continues to see students daily for minor and major injuries/illnesses. I've updated and/or added multiple health care plans for new and current students to the district which requires parent and staff training/education. We continue to work with students and their families on updating immunizations, mostly for our new-enrolled students. We've continued to complete hearing and vision screens for new students that fall in the required screening grade levels.  In other news, Channtel will be talking with our PIT students about nutrition and the importance of eating healthy.

Special Services

Special Services is gearing up for our yearly Safety Net review.  This process involves meeting numerous times and auditing Safety Net paperwork of students that qualify for Safety Net funding.  Devon Hillman and Devon Fliss provide their expertise during these meetings through the auditing process, working with the special education staff who create the legal documents for students.  The hard work of our Safety Net Team generates hundreds of thousands of dollars for students with special needs in the WSD.  We are proud of the efforts of our outstanding staff in Special Services!

TEAM High School

Our staff is helping six seniors at TEAM prepare to return to WHS to graduate this Spring.  We have been coordinating with Mitch Kochis to make sure they are all caught up and ready to return on track for graduation.  We are excited to partner with WHS to meet the needs of all the students in our district.  Overall, TEAM students are working hard to finish classes and are looking forward to winter break.

Title Program

At WMS, one important component of Title I support is through our highly competent paraprofessionals.  They work with students in both CORE and extension reading and math classes, running small groups and helping individual students understand and improve their learning achievement.

Transitional Bilingual Intervention Program

The Bilingual Club Winter Party will be Thursday, December 14 at WPS from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm.  Milagros has been working with Katherine Rodela (WSU) to bring the second part of the Parent Leadership Institute to Woodland in February 2018.  Milagros has been coordinating with Laura Perry, Nutrition Services Manager, and starting January 2018 we will have all the breakfast and lunch menus in Spanish.

Thank you for your ongoing support.  I hope you each have a wonderful Holiday Season!!
