Re: August/September Review

Here is an overview of the key activities we worked on in relation to teaching and learning this month.

Staff development and Mondays: We have now used three of our six district directed days for professional development.  We had three really good days of work together.  Part of our work was to revise Advisory (yes again) and trying to find a way to get it to work.  We spent time working on the “why” should we (or not) have an advisory program and then changing our plan a bit to match our “why.”  We also had a bit of a gut check conversation about the accreditation report, specifically around the perceived and reported lack of rigor in many of our classrooms. We had our first staff development Monday, today, and we used half of the time to implement our security system for the school.  Our alarms will be activated in two weeks.

Other information: Our school is full of students and we did need to add two sections of algebra 1 to lower our class sizes to 24.  The math teachers are very happy with this move and I appreciate Brent LiaBraaten and Mike Lindsay for their willingness to give up their preparation period to teach these additional sections.

I also wanted to mention that we did not have the large influx of juniors taking Running Start this year, but the class of 2018 continues to have a rather large percentage participating.  We also did receive the grant from OSPI to pay for up to 10 college in the high credits for our students, which is a tremendous way to keep our students on campus and offer them college courses from Central and LCC.

Overall, it has been a really smooth first few weeks of school and we all feel very settled.
