Re: Teaching and Learning

The secondary schools will soon begin reviewing instructional materials for middle and high school mathematics courses to be completed by early spring. It is our hope to recommend a pilot of materials by winter of this year and then propose adoption of new materials in these classrooms by fall 2018.

Over the past year, publishers have begun releasing secondary mathematics instructional materials that are tightly aligned with the Washington State standards so we will have several options to review.  An adoption process for reviewing instructional materials for pre-calculus, calculus, and statistics courses will be completed during the 2018-2019 school year. This year’s committee, facilitated by Asha Riley, will include one teacher from each of the middle school grades, two high school teachers, the middle and high school administrators, the K-12 mathematics manager, and parent representatives from both the middle and high schools. The committee will follow the same process for evaluation and selection that we have used for other instructional materials as outlined in Policy 2020.

At the elementary level, a committee of teachers and instructional coaches will be reviewing our social studies and science standards. This will involve a thorough look at how our current instructional resources deliver the content to students and will identify where there might be gaps.  At the conclusion of the review, the committee will evaluate supplemental resources we could add that would ensure our instructional program provides students access to all the standards. All supplemental resources proposed will also be vetted through the same process for selection as outlined in Policy 2020.
