Girls in Motion: WIS Running Club for 4th Grade Girls

Under the leadership of Mrs. Jamie Churchman, Girls in Motion started right after spring break. Currently, we have ten 4th grade girls who are training over the next 8 weeks for a 5k. They are tracking their progress using the “Couch to 5k” app. The Club’s culminating activity will be the Bigfoot 5k in Yacolt on June 24th.

PLAYWORKS: Indoor Recess Option

Our PBIS and PLAYWORKS teams wanted to provide alternative options for students who aren’t interested in playing outside games or play on the structures. They also wanted to provide an alternative to students who have a hard time in large groups and need a smaller, more controlled environment. Our PLAYWORKS team organized and started an indoor recess option for any student who would like to participate.   In a smaller indoor area, students will have the options to play indoor games, complete puzzles, color, or play board games. By balancing active play with simple social and/or academic play we are making our recess more manageable for everyone.

Lunch Buddy / Mentor Program

Research shows that a positive relationship with a mentor can greatly enhance a child’s self-esteem, academic and long-term success.  On May 1st, 2017 and in partnership with Youth and Family link, United Way, and Woodland Public Schools, Woodland Intermediate School will begin a Lunch Buddy Program.  Lunch buddies/mentors will be available for our students to eat with, talk to, laugh with, and depend on.  Students will be assigned to mentors who will spend 30-40 minutes once a week helping 2nd - 4th grade children grow in their relationships with peers and improve their feelings about their school community.  Thank you, Leslie Mohlman and Lindsay Hill for making this happen. Our students will benefit greatly.

SBA - Online Assessment Training

During the month of April, all 3rd -  4th grades students are preparing to take the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA).  Danielle Flanagan has designed a month-long course to get our students ready for taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment online.  Taking an assessment online for an extended period of time can be more difficult for some students than the traditional paper pencil assessment.  They need a different set of skills and strategies to stay motivated and to focus on a computer screen.  In a fun and creative way, students are learning the importance of taking the SBA.  Mrs. Flanagan is teaching them how to navigate the online tools found on the SBA.  She is also teaching students effective and important online test taking strategies to stay focused and motivated. Thank you, Danielle, for your creativity and fervor in providing our students with all the tools they need to be successful for online assessments.
