Focus on Learning
Our vision and mission is all about ensuring that all students learn at grade level or higher. To achieve our vision and mission, our school teams have collaboratively worked on ways to guarantee that students receive three tiers of learning support. Tier 1 is focused on providing access to grade-level essential standards for all students. Tier 2 is focused on providing additional time and support to meet grade-level essential standards. Each grade level teacher team designs, plans, and implements the instruction and monitoring of student learning for both Tier 1 & Tier 2. Tier 3 is focused on providing intensive remediation in universal skills for student who need an additional layer of support. Our school intervention team is responsible to design, plan, and implement the instruction and monitoring of student learning for Tier 3. Last month, our intervention team launched our Tier 3 level of support in reading. Students identified as needing intensive support and remediation in the foundations of reading are now receiving an additional 100 minutes a week. In just three weeks, students receiving Tier 3 support are already making impressive gains in reading. The intervention team meets weekly to analyze student data and plan intervention opportunities for students needing support in the universal skills found in reading, writing, number sense, behavior, and attendance. We hope to launch our Tier 3 interventions in number sense and behavior in the next few weeks.
In the coming weeks, 3rd & 4th grade students will be practicing for the Smarter Balanced Assessments in English Language Arts and Math. Over the course of the next few weeks, students will take an interim assessment which will allow us to determine what Washington Learning Standards are mastered and what standards need continued focus for each and every 3rd & 4th grade student. This information will be valuable to teachers as they continue to set student learning goals towards increasing student achievement and student mastery of the standards.
Our Positive Behavior Intervention System is having an impact. Weekly, our PBIS team meets to discuss the data we collect daily on student behavior. We use the data to collaborate and identify ways to increase positive student behavior. Our new strategies and implementation monitoring is changing the ways students behave. The PBIS team set a goal in November to decrease the average number of student behavior referrals from 9/day to 2/day. In just the last 2 months alone, our team efforts have brought our average of referrals down to about 3/day. We are close to making our goal.
Last month students were recognized at a special assembly for their exemplary display of Tolerance, January’s character trait of the month. February’s character trait of the month is Friendship.
