Re:  TEAM Board Report

1) School Improvement Plan

One of TEAM’s SIP goals is to reduce the number of students who are withdrawn from TEAM due to lack of academic progress. Our goal is to reduce the number of students withdrawn to an average of 2.5 per month. Through the end of semester 1 of this school year, we averaged 3.2 students withdrawn per month. While this does represent a 13% improvement, it’s also small enough to be within the margin of error. It’s questionable whether we’ve impacted that mark through program efforts or if we just got a little bit lucky this semester.

This is a tough mark to impact, and the lower it gets, the tougher it is to impact. There are a number of factors, only some of which can be influenced by school staff. I believe that we’ve picked all the low-lying fruit, which is to say that we’ve done those things that are clear to do. Our graduation rate is well up, and our withdrawal rate is down overall. The next step as a staff is to identify some of those next level things we might try. These are the more difficult things that are likely to yield smaller results percentage wise. However, every percentage point represents a kid and a life, so we’re motivated to take a close this spring during our staff meetings and think a little bit outside of the box. We’ll report as some ideas begin to crystalize.

2)  Recognition

Jillian Domingo recently received a grant from the Washington Educators’ Association which provides funds to small and rural schools to provide school materials. In this case, the grant funds will be targeted to stock a small library of books for students to read and check out for fun and leisure. This is another example of TEAM staff going above and beyond to pursue extra opportunities for kids.
