RE: Text Adoption Recommendation

The Text Adoption Committee recommends the adoption of the following book for use at Woodland High School.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief: This book will be used in our 9th-grade English classes. This story will be explored during the Greek Mythology unit. It was selected because it is accessible to all levels of high school readers. Students will specifically analyze the figurative language in the text and develop their vocabulary.  The text offers lots of vocabulary development for our bilingual and struggling readers. It was selected for 9th-grade students because the storyline provides a highly engaging plot in which teen characters take part in an action-packed adventure.

The story is about a teen boy named Percy Jackson who discovers his ADHD and other learning challenges are due to being a demigod - the son of Poseidon. He is whisked off to an Olympian summer camp to train to become a hero. He eventually takes a dangerous quest to prevent the gods from going to war and destroying the earth.
