AVID at Woodland High School

During the summer of 2022, a number of teachers and administrators from Woodland High School attended AVID Summer institutes with the goal of deepening their understanding of AVID and how it could benefit Woodland students. The purpose of this presentation is to inform the board about AVID with the goal of seeking funding for program implementation beginning in the 2023-2024 school year.

AVID, (Advancement Via Individual Determination), is a highly effective program that has been implemented in more than 8,000 schools in 48 states across the U.S., plus schools in the Department of Defense Education, Canada, and Australia. AVID impacts more than 2 million students in grades K–12 and 62 postsecondary institutions.  In Washington, State AVID is in 438 schools.

AVID is a nonprofit that provides a powerful and proven teacher and leader professional development that results in the provision of a highly successful in-school academic support system of rigor for K-16 students which places underachieving high-risk students in a college preparatory program to prepare them to go to and succeed in college, career, and life. AVID has a 38+ year history of students taking rigorous courses and being provided with intensive and targeted support to ensure their success. AVID has consistently shown it can eliminate the college readiness gap for all subgroups of students. Parents become involved at a variety of levels.

Dr. Pearson and the Woodland High School team will present to the board and seek approval to proceed with implementing AVID at Woodland High School beginning in the 23-24 school year.

Administrative Recommendation /MOTION/ "I move we approve the implementation of AVID at Woodland High School beginning in the 23–24 school year."
