Carpool Pick Up
North Fork has always struggled with our traffic overflowing onto Lewis River Road during parent pick up. We have worked hard to find a solution especially during these challenging times when we have so many parents wanting to pick up their children instead of riding the bus. We have blocked off a row of parking and configured three parallel rows of cars that combine into one lane at the loop. We have also printed name placards for every parent so staff can quickly move students to their cars. Parents have appreciated the speedy pick up and not being stuck on Lewis River Road.
Independent Reading Practice
We know as educators that the more opportunities for students to practice reading the more growth they will have. Partner Reading is a strategy that all North Fork teachers practice. This has been difficult to implement due to social distancing and students being able to hear their partners. A number of our teachers suggested Whisper Phones.
Due to our creative and ingenious teachers, we were able to make every student a whisper phone using PVC pipe. This allows students to hear themselves read and practice while the teacher moves around the room. 20 students reading at once, and yet a relatively quiet room! As an adjustment to the curriculum this year every teacher has committed to having students read their Decodable books and independent books for 20 minutes.

We have all of our Kindergarteners through Second graders back in the building and I can’t begin to tell you how amazing it is! Our teachers and staff are delighted and working hard at continuing all of our safety protocols to keep students in the building.
