Re: WMS February 2019 Board Report

The following are the items we have been working on at Woodland Middle School:

Thank You

Woodland Middle School staff would like to extend our gratitude to the school board for all that they do behind the scenes to make our district and schools great.  We salute you and thank you for your service.  It is much appreciated.

High School Visits

Our 8th graders will be visiting the high school on March 20th.  This will be a great opportunity to meet with high school counselors, tour WHS programs, and forecast for next year.  This a positive event for our students to begin getting acclimated to life in high school.

Pride Night at WMS

Our pride night this year will be on Thursday, February 28th from 5-7pm. This will be a great occasion to share student work and visit with families.  Tara Eilts has done an awesome job organizing this event and gathering sponsors for prizes.  We will also be providing a free dinner and many fun activities.

Choices

Eighth-grade students participated in the “CHOICES” program during their science classes in January.  This is an interactive workshop presented in partnership with community outreach specialists from Fibre Federal Community Union.  The two-day CHOICES workshop uses a proactive approach to address the epidemic of students dropping out of high school across Washington State and the entire country.

Junior Achievement Biztown

WMS sixth graders attended the Biztown event in Portland as part of our new Personal Finance/Citizenship class.  This class is a semester-long class for sixth graders and Biztown is one of the highlights.  Biztown is a simulated town where students work as customer service representatives, store managers, and even CEOs.  Students learn what it is like to have a job, run a business, and how the economy works.  This opportunity also teaches students about credit, payments, debits, fees, deposits, and withdrawals, along with getting a paycheck.  Special thanks goes to Robin Uhlenkott for coordinating this event.  Also, we are grateful for the help of Emily Swett and WHS high school students for volunteering to make this a great experience.

Our Student of the Month award winners for January were:

5th- Kenny Fabian and Gwen Ponder

6th- Lourdes Anguiano-Franco and Amelia Bareford

7th- Tony Peonio and Collett MacDonald

8th- Hayley Summers and Monica Martinez-Alejo
