WORKSHOP

In Partnership with Families and the Community

There were four key elements of this work session:

  1. Parent perceptions survey from 2017.
  2. Our formal communication efforts, strategies, and outcomes.
  3. Our efforts to support families through our Family and Community Support Programs.
  4. Our efforts to work with students and families to support school attendance.

Michael Green started with a slide show presentations that framed out the parent survey results. The survey was completed in April during the parent/teacher conference week. There were a total of 372 families who participated in the survey.  The survey was a proportional representation of families in the school district with the exception of Hispanic families.  Though the survey was offered in both English and Spanish, a relatively small number of survey takers self-identified as Hispanic.  The school board members shared feedback and asked a few clarifying questions.

Second, Eric Jacobson, Communications Manager, reviewed the existing methods of communication the district uses, how they work and how often they are used. He talked about the Woodland weekly emails, social media resources, the community matters newsletter, our website and the use of the Robocalls.  He then turned to the school board members for feedback on strategies and stories that they would like to see covered.  Director Donald suggested a monthly feature story on a staff member and stories on community partnerships. Director Madsen recommended coverage on the use of school funds, with anticipation of needing to approach the public in the not too distant future for capital funding of new construction.

Next, Leslie Mohlman, Community, Family & Student Resource Coordinator explained the program she is working to create. Her first priority is to try to meet the basic needs of the students of Woodland Public Schools and their families. She has established food banks at all the schools. Her work with the families on housing options, utility bill reduction, job searches and parenting classes are just a few areas she has assisted with. Leslie partnership with local churches, organizations, and businesses has been crucial in her successes.

Last, Stacy Mouat, the new Woodland truancy specialist, presented to the school board. She sharing that the first six months with the district has been about learning the truancy laws and creating a program from the ground up. The program she is creating has many layers that start at a student’s 3rd unexcused absence. Every day missed for a student is a lost learning opportunity, the ultimate goal is to have students in school every day. Based on the current practices she suggested some policy updates to the school board.
