RE: Monthly Report Woodland Primary School (Grades PreK-1)

Celebrations: WPS students have been busy celebrating and honoring others during this busy season. On October 31st, students all celebrated the harvest season in classrooms with special activities, while the day before kindergarten visited their very own pumpkin patch!  November 9th, children treated community members with a Veteran’s Day assembly that included special songs and artwork. Even our toughest soldiers were visibly touched. In addition, WPS has been recognizing important character traits each month with fun assemblies. School goals are a focus area, and children earn incentives as a whole building, by grade level, and individually. This is making positive behavior fun for everyone!

The WPS Holiday Concert and Gallery Walk will be held on the evening of December 12th at 6:30 p.m in the WPS Gym. This program should be a fun way for children to highlight the work they have been involved in during art and music time, as well as a chance to give a gift of song and art to the community.

Substitutes:  There have been a very large number of substitutes, both classified and certificated, serving WPS over the past couple of months. This is mostly due to staff who have transferred into newly available positions, which creates more openings and additional movement. This has been a challenge as our program obviously functions best with stable personnel. Continuity has improved over the past couple of weeks, so this should have a positive impact on behavior at WPS.

Special Programs Adjustment: In an effort to adjust to significant behavioral challenges and staffing needs, WPS is changing the support model for providing service to children who need specific behavioral and academic assistance. This impacts both special education and the general education programs, as the staff serving children in both areas will be working together to better respond to emergent needs. This should result in less injuries to staff and fewer behavioral escalations. Please note that most staff injury reports are related to two children, and these cases are being monitored carefully to ensure conditions improve quickly. Hopefully, this program adjustment will assist with these specific situations, as well as better serve all WPS children.
