Woodland Reads Culminating Event: The Reptile Man
On Wednesday, November 15th, students were treated to a culminating event that marked the completion of our school-wide book read of “The One and Only Ivan.” The Reptile Man brought about 20 exotic reptiles from around world as a way to educate students about reptiles and reptile safety. The majority of the reptiles were obtained from local police and animal control agencies. The Reptile Man and his exotic reptiles have found their way into TV commercials, the movie industry, as well as humane training tools known as “Rattlesnake Aversion Training” for over 100 hunting dogs. The students loved the training they received and literally haven’t been able to stop talking about it since.
Veteran’s Day Assembly
On Thursday, November 9th, students presented a heartwarming and emotionally moving dedication to our local Veterans. Under the direction of Mrs. Linda Morris, students presented songs and poems that explored their love for our country and the men and women who serve or have served in the Armed Forces. All attending Veterans were also given a loaf of bread as a small token of our appreciation for their service.
Leadership Assembly
On Friday, October 27th, students were honored for modeling the Woodland Way, Habit of the Month #1: Be Proactive, and good attendance. On December 8th, students will also be recognized for making significant learning gains based on iReady results.
Job Corps
Job Corps is a schoolwide opportunity designed to help students build self-esteem, self-efficacy and a sense of belonging and importance within our school community. Students work closely with their Job Corps mentor, receiving acknowledgment for their work and effort. The job corps mentor also provides positive coaching through problems and difficulties.
Students in the Job Corps apply for a job of their choice through an application process. Once hired, the students report to their job and job corps mentor on the days/times required for that job. Job Corps mentors communicate student performance weekly to the Job Corps manager.
Over 200 students currently have a job as part of our Job Corp program at WIS.
