RE: Monthly Report Woodland Intermediate School

Leadership Focuses on Bullying

Over the past four weeks, our students have been learning how to be a “Bully Buster” during their leadership class. Students learned about what it means to be a bully or bullied the roles in bullying (bully, the victim, bystander, and up-stander), and several strategies that students can use when they feel they are bullied or they witness bullying behavior.  At the end of the unit, students created a role play with a team to showcase what they learned about bullying.

Habit of the Month

The Habit of the Month for April is Habit 5: Seek First to Understand and Then to be Understood. Students will be learning how to listen to other people’s ideas and feelings, seeing things from others viewpoints, listening to others without interrupting, building confidence in voicing own ideas, and looking people in the eyes when talking.

Read Across America

On March 2nd, we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday and his love for reading with an evening designed for students and their families to engage in activities that promote reading.  The evening was well attended.  Over 300 people came to celebrate the joy of reading.

Woodland Reads

The last three weeks have been dedicated to every student and adult at WIS in reading the book, “Because of Winn-Dixie” by Kate DiCamillo. Each morning, classrooms compete to answer the most questions derived from the prior night’s assigned reading. Classrooms then are awarded the trophy (a dog toy that hangs from the classroom door)  for the day.  The students love it. On March 23, the “Because of Winn-Dixie” culminating event took place at 5:30 p.m. The evening was filled with fun activities designed to celebrate student and staff success in finishing the book.
