Here are a few of the highlights in CTE at WMS and WHS over the past month:
Business/Marketing
FBLA
Students are working with Mark Laundry from Maschmedt & Associates. Students will be heling Mark develop a social media campaign focused on branding. Currently, students are creating a database of clients for the company. Once completed, students will be able use the contact information collected and begin advertising.
Financial Fitness
Students are scheduled to participate in the Financial Reality Fair on March 28th, 2017. They have selected a career choice for the fair and will be able to go through the processes of budgeting based on the salary for the career they have chosen.
Marketing
Students will be visiting Weiden + Kennedy, a well-known advertising agency, on April 28th. They will be able to tour the facility as well as speak with industry professionals.
Auto Shop/Welding
Students in auto maintenance have been building two engines a ford 4.6l v-8 and a Chevrolet 5.7l v-8. Welding students built an engine test stand to be able to run the engines when complete for leak and operation check. We are also working on trucks, cars, and mini bikes. They have swapped transmissions, fixed fuel pumps, installed stereo equipment, bed lined a truck bed and interior, changed and balanced tires, tune-ups, etc. They also have another transmission job and engine job in line for repair.
Horticulture
We are hosting over 20 teams from all over the state for the state horticulture career development event this weekend (March 25). Winners advance to FFA Nationals in Indiana next fall.
Medical Science/Biology
The Medical Science class/HOSA set up a large "mock up" for the promotional CTE video. The students practiced in class on Monday and then the videographer came in on Tuesday during 5th period to video our presentations. Some students were performing and practicing their CPR skills, some had a model of the internal organs of the body and were placing them in the body in the correct positions, some were taking EKG's of each other’s hearts, some were setting up enzyme labs with beakers and test tubes, others were dissecting fetal pigs, others were taking blood pressure while still others were working with skeletons and memorizing bones. All essential skills needed for medical science students. This was a wonderful day for my students to get together and practice skills we have been learning all year!
Family and Consumer Science Education
As expected (or hoped) all 7 of the students competing at the regional level for SkillsUSA have been invited to State competition in Yakima. Several of the students will be competing in three different competitions. State Leadership Conference is April 27-29.
Taste of Jazz saw our largest turnout yet both in the number of students participating for culinary and the number of patrons enjoying the evening. We served 4 different desserts this year including a new category which was sugar-free.
WMS Horticulture
The WMS garden club starts up next week and they will be beginning their community garden (located west of the portables). The community has been generous – with over 2k in donations going to this project… Over 600 packets of organic seeds from various companies. Retail value about $ 1200… tools and gift cards from parents… $600 worth of hydroponic equipment from Hydroponics NW (a local Woodland business)… a load of wood chips from Kafferlin Trucking… a parent donated a truck load of compost… and Home Depot has given us $500 in gift cards.
WMS Computer Programming/Lego Robotics
Our LEGO Team qualified for the FIRST LEGO League Global Innovation Award at the State Championships this year. The Team is currently working hard to finish our application with all its requirements by March 29th. Once they have finished the application, several ELA teachers have volunteered to review it against the supplied Rubrics the competition provided. If selected as one of the 20 semifinalists, our team will get a chance to present their solution to a board in Washington DC. Semifinalists will be announced by April 21, 2017. The top 3 winners will receive cash awards of 20,000, 5,000 and 5,000 - to be used toward their solutions our to help develop their programs. The officials at the Oregon State Championships said that "Your team has the best chance of being selected than any of the solutions that have been nominated by Oregon.” Our students are very excited and Mr. Judd is very proud of the hard work and teamwork they have displayed this season.
Curriculum update…
We are working on frameworks for both computer programming and robotics courses for the high school, with the goal being to offer those courses in the fall.
There is also a meeting scheduled with a member of the Oregon Carpenter’s Union to explore the possibility of beginning a tiny home project down the road.
