CALL TO ORDER

President Janice Watts called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.

WORKSHOP

The agenda of the workshop this month was to review the roles of a superintendent and school board, self-assess the effectiveness of the school board and make a plan for upcoming workshop discussions.  Superintendent Green started by having all the board members complete a survey based on questions regarding the qualities of an effective school board. This helped them self-reflect the school board strengths and weakness. This lead to deeper conversations and provided more of an understanding of what areas are strong each of the school board members and what areas need to be improved as a whole group.

The board reviewed the School Board & Superintendent Roles from the Operating Principles document.   There was a good discussion about the roles of individual directors vs the board as a team.   It was agreed and acknowledged that school board members do not stop being parents and community members when they join the school board and that they are expected to represent themselves as such in interactions with the school and community unless they are acting on behalf of the school board on an agreed upon committee, etc.

Lastly, the school board members had the opportunity to brainstorm topics they would like to dig deeper into. A substantial list was created based on all the comments from the members. It will be expanded, reviewed, prioritized and become the basis for planning future workshops.
