Athletic Program Update

Winter Sports

1.       HS Girls' Basketball

a.        Lost close game to WF West for berth to Regionals. WF West has since made the final 4 at state.

b.       Turnout numbers were down this year, coach is looking forward to strong 8th grade class to help increase numbers. 3 starters return next season.

2.       HS Boys' Basketball

a.        All but one player returning next season - ended season starting 4 freshman.

b.       Coach is looking forward to strong 8th grade class to help increase low turnout numbers from this year.

3.       HS Wrestling

a.        Willie Davis was lone representative at state tournament (lost in 2).

b.       Wrestling coaches also looking forward to strong 8th grade class to improve turnout numbers.

Spring Sports

1.       HS Boys' Baseball

a.        New head coach (Owen Frasier - former assistant at Skyview HS) has been hired

b.       Turnout numbers are at 27... very few upperclassmen - similar to all other boys' sports this year.

c.        Two volunteer coaches added to the staff (Dan Larson, Dan Beatty).

d.       Installed second batting cage in Primary Mezzanine.

e.       Varsity field improvements almost completed

           i.      Red rock (donated by Dave Jennings Trucking) has been added to border of field.

           ii.      Sod cutting and tractor work donated by Brandon Eterno (cousin of new head coach).

           iii.      Turnout has been very good at weekend workdays by players and parents.

f.         JV field in process of being re-done (weather is not cooperating).

g.        First game is March 17 vs. La Center (at Woodland).

2.       HS Girls' Fastpitch

a.        Defending 2A State Champions return all but one starter.

b.       Turnout numbers are at 26.

c.        Two volunteer coaches added to the staff (Kim Dyson, George Trice)

d.       JV field in process of being re-done (weather is not cooperating).

e.       JV dugouts in the works - still working out donations.

f.         Varsity field in good shape.

g.        First game is March 16 vs. Prairie (at Woodland).

3.       HS Boys' Soccer

a.        Turnout numbers are at 17.

b.       Fred Jenkins has been re-hired as coach.

c.        One volunteer coach added (Chad Holdahl).

d.       JV season was cancelled.

e.         First game is March  18 vs. Ft. Vancouver (at Woodland)

4.       HS Track

a.        Turnout numbers are at 42.

b.       New assistant coach has been added to the staff (Melanie Holmes - also head CC coach).

c.        Two volunteer coaches added (Bruce Flanagan, Dennis Koering)

d.       First meet is March 17 at Woodland.

5.       HS Girls' Golf

a.        Turnout numbers are at 10.

b.       Three volunteer coaches added to the staff (Lynell Tsugawa, Sam Jouwsma, and Don Ditzler)

c.        First match is March 17 vs. La Center at Tri Mtn. Golf Course

6.       MS Track

a.        Season begins April 11.

7.       Current projects...

a.        Winter MS and HS Head Coach end of season meetings.

b.       Preparation of JV fields for play.

c.        JV Fastpitch dugouts.

d.       Possible fence repair to both varsity fields.

e.       Stump removal from varsity baseball parking area.

8.       Looking ahead...

a.        Initial committee meetings for transportation, athletic handbook and Hall of Fame.

b.       Finish update of record boards in HS gym.

c.        Update MS Gym school mascot boards.

d.       Fix wall pads and broken rims and add Trojan mural in MS Gym.

e.       Continue working towards implementation of a HS Letterman's Club for fall.

f.         Explore possible implementation of annual/season family and individual athletic passes (this has been a consistent request from the community).

g.        Facility research - compare our rates and guidelines to those of neighboring districts.

h.        Update leagueminder website and prepare for full implementation in the fall - train coaches and parents on how to use for messages, schedule changes, team information, etc..

i.       Establish uniform purchasing cycle for next year.
