Woodland School Board Monthly Update

March 2009

Throughout the month of March professional development opportunities for staff were focused on the areas of CRISS, reading and the inquiry process, and WASL preparation.

On Monday, March 2nd Mo Anderson presented CRISS lesson #10 to the WIS staff.

On Monday, March 9th staff members collaborated in grade level teams to analyze practice WASL assessments, identify trends within their grade level and classroom, and create plans as to how they are going to address the trends that were identified.

On Monday, March 16th Mo Anderson facilitated a reading lesson that focused on the inquiry process.

WIS staff members are in the preliminary planning stages of a family reading activity.  The activity will incorporate information pertaining to our reading curriculum, how parents can assist their children as developing readers, a book exchange, and possibly food and beverages.  We are planning on hosting the activity after WASL testing is complete.

March is a very stressful month for WIS staff members.  We are concluding the third quarter, facilitating parent conferences, and preparing to test for the WASL.  This year 474 WIS students will take approximately 2,496 WASL tests over our 14 day testing window.  Much of March included the development of WASL testing schedules, the organization of test and make up test facilitators, student testing placements, and developing new specialist schedules that were compatible with testing schedules.

Students and staff participated in a Spirit Day on March 20th.  The theme was Crazy Hat and Hair Day.  The highlight of the day included a spirit assembly that took place during the last 30 minutes of the school day.  The assembly included publicly recognizing Student of the Month award winners and class competitions.  Spirit Days continue to be incredibly popular among our students.
