Recording of School Board Meetings

At the January 27th meeting of the Board of Directors, Director Huddleston made a motion to record board meetings and post the recordings on the district website. Director Guthrie seconded the motion.

After amendments, the board adopted a motion that read: "The board will discuss and potentially vote on the question of recording school board meetings and posting them on the district website after the end of the legislative session regardless of whether the bill (HB 1973) requires recording passes or not."

HB 1973 passed the House but failed to advance out of committee in the Senate; killing the bill.

The legislature did adopt, and the Governor did sign, HB 1329, which, beginning on June 9, 2022, implements several changes to the Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA).  Among the changes to the OPMA was the following "encouragement."

"NEW SECTION. Sec. 4. A new section is added to chapter 42.30 RCW to read as follows: (1) Public agencies are encouraged to make an audio or video recording of, or to provide an online streaming option for, all regular meetings of its governing body, and to make recordings of these meetings available online for a minimum of six months."
