This month I want to share some exciting things happening at the high school this year in the ELL program. The students are participating in a new program called iLit which is a proven research based program to increase literacy. The students are working on Chromebooks using a variety of different activities and lessons the program offers to increase their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in English. The students also are attending specialized history and science classes in order to help them achieve content area mastery in those subjects. We also had a math teacher this year become specially trained, with an instructional program called, Structured Information Observational Protocal (SIOP) in order to better serve the ELL students in their classrooms and we are seeing some promising results in that class as well. More and more at the high school, we are seeing students step outside their comfort zones as they participate in a variety of the elective classes the high school offers such as metal shop, floral design, percussion and art classes.
