RE: Tech Dept. Executive Summary

On the surface, things have been fairly quiet as schools are humming along and things are working pretty well, but we’re continuing to make improvements behind the scenes. We’ve just upgraded our Windows image and update deployment system so that it works better with Windows 10. Overall our Windows 10 experience has been positive, our staff haven’t been phased by the changes, most of our software and hardware have worked just fine, and now our background management should be more efficient as well.

We’re experimenting with some options on improving the experience of our guest wireless access, and talking to key folks about what it’s purpose should be. It’s down right now as our shoe-string setup was no longer functioning consistently across the wide variety of devices that could connect to it. This will be brought to administrators for discussion once we have gathered enough information, but the key point is that network resources aren’t infinite (as I mentioned last month), so it’s a question of how to manage it, and that depends on who it’s for and how much we want to invest in it. Hopefully, we’ll get to the bottom of that shortly.

We’re also continuing work on an upgrade to Sips. This is somewhat involved as Sips has grown into a fairly large application serving a few different data storage and analysis needs. As the school year progresses I hope to be able to start switching portions of this over to the new system, which promises to be faster and more maintainable going forwards.
