RE: Teaching & Learning Report

Collecting Data on Student Performance in Math and Reading:

Last month, I presented our student achievement results from the 2016 administration of state assessments. Following that presentation, I indicated we would be taking some action steps in response to our performance. Our first step was to collect more data on student performance by administering reading and math assessments for all K-8 students three times this school year.

Attached are the results from our first round of reading and math assessments in grades K-8. The data is organized by subject and grade. The results describe the percentage of students below level, at expected level, and above level in each grade.

You will notice that our Kindergarteners appear to have 100% of students performing at level. However, these results are only representative of Yale school. Kindergarten students at WPS did not participate in this first round of iReady math or reading assessments. This is due to the amount of time it takes for them to complete Whole Child Assessment we administer to every Kindergartener in our district. The Whole Child assessment is comprehensive inventory of developmental skills and is due to be completed by November 7.

Each school has also received detailed reports about specific student achievement, trends in performance, and building-wide need for strategic intervention. With these reports, the principals are planning how they will respond to the current student need in math and reading.

Improvement Plans:

This year the district and each school in the district will participate in an improvement process using a tool referred to as Indistar. The process is designed to ensure school improvement plans develop into cycle of improvement rather than a static report.

The Action Planning Cycle for Continuous Improvement is as follows:

  • Assess need for change and determine problems of student learning
  • Identify problems of practice
  • Explore and select interventions that will address the identified problems of practice
  • Craft actions plans for change that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely
  • Implement the action plans
  • Monitor and revise plans to ensure we are positively impacting student achievement
