Tech Report

Date: February 18, 2015

From: Steve Rippl
Subject: Tech Dept. Executive Summary

Staff have begun taking students through the new WCAP online practice tests. This year the Primary School’s third grade students are taking part online for the first time, so one of our new Chromecarts went straight to their building. Technically the software seems to be working fine, we’ve had no complaints or problems except at Yale, so we’ll have to pop up there shortly to check things out for them.

Preparations for the new phone system continue. I’m having weekly online conferences with the team at Ednetics as we plan and schedule the transition. Concurrently we’re upgrading a few switches to have POE in place (power over ethernet, to power the phones) and installing new or upgrading existing UPSs to ensure the phones, switches and phone gateways stay up for a while in the event of a power outage.

And of course preparations for the new school continue. We had about 160 thin clients from our Camas donations that we had held back for the new building, they have now been assigned and labeled for the rooms they will go in and boxed up ready to be moved. We’ve ordered the staff computers, and those will be assigned in our management system and labeled in advance as well. We’re also continuing the work of segmenting the network, currently removing the address space that will soon be used in the new building from the main campus. This is fiddly work and we are cutting off the occasional printer or computer as we go, but I’m more comfortable doing this slowly and piece by piece than all in one go at a later date!
