The Special Services Department conducted it’s first of four professional development opportunities during October focused on how the Common Core Standards (CCSS) can be applied to writing special education Individual Educational Plan’s (IEP’s). These are the documents that the special education teachers prepare yearly for each student which include their current levels of academic performance, previous progress towards goals and new goals for the year. Our work around the Common Core Standards will be to immerse ourselves in knowing these standards deeply and how to effectively meld them into IEP process.
As we discussed our work at the training, we determined that unpacking the standards with a general education teacher would help us communicate exactly where a student is in comparison to the expectation. This will assist all of us to develop genuine modifications and accommodations with the general education teacher in the future. We are excited about our new learning and plan to continue this work with 3 additional 3.5 hour training dispersed throughout the year.
