Policy 6883: Closure of School Facilities for Instructional Purposes

Following the June 8th meeting of the board of directors I rewrote policy 6883.   My recommendation reads as follows:

Policy No. 6883

CLOSURE OF SCHOOL FACILITIES
FOR INSTRUCTIONAL PURPOSES

The board of directors has the authority to close a school building for instructional purposes.  Except in instances of unforeseen conditions as defined in RCW 28A.151.290, prior to final consideration of closure of any school for instructional purposes the following is necessary:

The Superintendent shall develop a written summary containing an analysis as to the effects of the proposed school closure.

Ninety days prior to a final decision upon any school closure, the board of directors shall hold one or more hearing to receive testimony from the public on any issues related to the closure.  Separate hearings shall be held for each school which is proposed to be closed.

The district shall, at a minimum, publish notice of hearing pertaining to a proposed school closure.  This notice shall contain the date, time, place, and purpose of the hearing.  Notice of each hearing shall be published once each week for two consecutive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation in the area where the school, subject to closure, is located.  The last notice of hearing shall be published not later than seven days immediately before the final hearing.
